Making a Writing Portfolio - 3 Step to Consider

A writing portfolio is nothing but a critical tool that highlights the writing ability of a person. Whether you are an aspiring writer looking for a job or a student intending to graduate from a college that offers creative writing programs, this writing portfolio is very important. There are many ways to create an effective portfolio that can highlight your writing capabilities in you.
You may have a blend of writing just as poems and short stories, personal essays, articles in newspapers, research papers etc. which can be integrated in your portfolio. It will be better to have copies of all of your work in both hard copy and digital form so that you can have a collection of your writing available at your hand.
1. Select and Arrange Your Writing Samples
The first thing you can do it to select and arrange the writing samples in your portfolio. If you are applying for work at a magazine, you might include published clips from newspapers, personal essays, and a specimen of a research paper. You cannot include poetry or short stories in it. You should aim at customizing your portfolio for the job instead of creating a common portfolio which may not be suited to all type of jobs.
2. Organizing Samples in Hard Copy
Suppose your writing samples are required in hard copy, you may organize them carefully and package them in a document case. Choose some of the best samples and create an index. The samples should be formatted properly so that they have a fine appearance and easy to read. If your writing samples comprise of clips, you should better get them scanned or photocopied for inclusion.
3. Maintain Digital Portfolios
Now you can maintain digital portfolios on your websites so that you can have easy access whenever you wish at just few clicks. You can also use your websites as generic portfolios, with links to particular types of writing in order that potential employers can examine a variety of your samples. You can save your digital portfolios on disc or as electronic files which can be easily emailed to potential employers.
